De-clutter and pack less:

  • Don’t move that same box of junk again!  If you haven’t opened it since you moved the last time, get rid of it.
  •  Get rid of duplicate items, or mismatched linens, silverware, pots and pans, and other housewares.  Donate to charity or a shelter. Some charities will even come and collect large items for free.
  • Pare down the books you don’t read or movies you don’t watch.
  • Get rid of any clothing you don’t fit into, feel great in, or wear often
  • Get rid of the “I might need it someday” items you’ve stockpiled (half bottles of shampoo, partial containers of paint, toiletries you took from the hotel on your last vacation).

Make sure you don’t lose things in the shuffle:

  • Use this as an opportunity to clean up your paperwork. Shred what you don’t need. Collect together all of the family’s important documents (Passports, birth certificates, wills, health info, SIN cards, etc.) and put them in a fireproof box or a safe where you can find them.

Label your boxes:

  • Labeling and color coding boxes is a great way to stay organized. Colored duct tape is a great way to sort things at a glance… Much faster than reading. Make a legend on a sheet of paper for the people helping you move: Pink= girls’ room, Blue = Kitchen, Green = Dining Room, etc. You can also put tape right on the doors at the new house so people know what room is which.

Be prepared:

  • Pack an overnight bag for what you need the first night: PJ’s, grooming supplies, toilet paper and cleaning supplies, as well as snacks, some utensils, and anything else you’ll want in the next 24 hours. This will prevent you from having to start unpacking to look for what you need.

Don't forget to change your address:

  • Driver's Licence
